Much like in previous years, BHM continues to spark controversy among certain individuals and groups. Despite its significance and importance, there are still those who question the necessity of dedicating a month to the celebration and recognition of Black history.

While this list is not exhaustive, it does highlight several frequently mentioned reasons.

  • The topic of race and ethnicity and their impact on systematic inequality is often met with different perspectives. There are those who do not acknowledge the historical influence on present-day disparities, suggesting that it is a thing of the past and should be left there.
  • Some people view Black History Month as a mere opportunity for superficial displays of diversity without addressing the underlying issues.
  • In the ongoing debates regarding inequality, there are those who acknowledge its existence but assert that it is not as severe as in certain other regions, such as the USA or Europe. This perspective is often put forth to downplay the significance of the issue at hand and the impact it has on individuals and societies.

Each year, we collectively unite to educate and dispel misconceptions, just as we have done in previous years.

Tokenism: Moving Beyond

Tokenism refers to the practice of making superficial or symbolic efforts to include individuals from underrepresented groups, without genuinely addressing the systemic issues that create such imbalances.

While it may seem like progress to have individuals from diverse backgrounds represented in various environments, tokenism often falls short of creating real change.

In order to transcend mere tokenism, a change in perspective and behaviors is necessary. The key is to establish inclusive spaces that genuinely appreciate and honor the diverse contributions of individuals.

There is a growing number of organisations that are following words with action, committing to long term investments to support black communities.

The Independent has recently unveiled a collaborative initiative with aimed at providing free advertising space on its platform in 2024 for black organizations.
